Related Who was Napoleon's most competent General or Marshal? |

Louis-Nicolas
Davout is considered by most historians to be the greatest general of the
age, save Napoléon himself. Marshall Davout was an excellent general in every
respect. Equally talented with infantry, cavalry, and artillery, Davout
excelled in independent command, which is how Napoléon usually utilized him. |

Michel Ney was both Napoleon's best and worst. He was a
brilliant commander under Napoléon, but only when under Napoleon's command. |

When Napoléon took a nap at the battle of Waterloo, leave Ney
temporarily in charge, Ney kept ordering cavalry charges that effectively
devastated... his own cavalry. |

When Napoléon
returned to the battlefield, he was like "WTF m8?l?" Marshall Ney's
poor decision as an indépendant commander is the reason why train stations,
cities, and universities are named for Waterloo. |

If Davout was at Quatre bras on June 16th, Napoléon would hâve

Davout would hâve

Napoléon at Ligny the incredible way Ney did. |

Related Why did Marshal Ney betray Napoléon? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Ney put his butt on
the line for Napoléon in every major campaign of the empire. If there was a
suicide job to do Ney rode right to the front and cheered the troops on.
Nobody thought Ney to be the brightest bulb in the Marshalate. When Napoléon
capitulated in 1814 Ney accepted Louis XVIII as his new Monarch. When
Napoléon came back to France, Ney impetuously told the King he would bring
him back in an Iran Cage. But on finding Napoléon, Ney melted like butter and
took his old place back. |

If he betrayed anyone it was the Bourbon King. As mentioned,
it cost him his life. |

I wouldn't say so,
he was probably one of the better ones. He played a key role in holding off
the Russians long enough to allow the French army to retreat from Russia, and
at one point executed a rather spectacular maneuver when he escaped a Russian
pincer and rejoined the Grande Armee. He was also the last French soldier to
leave Russia. His actions in Russia earned him the nickname Bravest of the
Brave. |

I don’t think either of

The Battle of
Waterloo is probably one of, if not, the most excessively war-gamed battles.
The usual resuit, and this is from hundreds of players using similar forces
or slight variations or any form of stipulation, is that the French attack

Prussian reinforcements who they then stop and then the Prussians retreat the

fought sixty battles during his career, from Italy to Belgium, taking in

I tried to study who were the choices for the next French
head-of-state AFTER Napoléon I according to the Allies AND the French
royalists in 1814.. |

The royalists were split
between the South preferring Princess Marie-Therese as Queen-Regnant and the
North preferring Prince Louis Stanislas, Count of Provence and titular King
Louis XVIII. |

Related How did Michel Ney, a competent

Marshall Ney was,
in my opinion (for what it is worth), an excellent divisional commander and a
good corps commander, but I honestly believe he was a bit out of his depth
when entrusted with greater responsibility such as command of the Left Wing
of Napoleon's army during the 100 Days Campaign which culminated in Waterloo.
He bungled badly at Quatre Bras fighting Wellington's rear guard, while
Napoléon was fighting the Prussians by ordering D'Erlon's Corps to march to
his aid just as D'Erlon was reaching a position to eut off the Prussian's
retreat. This allowed the defeated Prussians to withd... (more) |

Coronation of Charlemagne |
|
|
|
|
|
|
The Holy Roman
Empire emerged in the Christmas of 800 when Charlemagne was crowned Emperor
by the Pope in Rome. The Byzantines considered the title of Emperor to be a
privilège of their own monarch only, the Roman Basileus. In fact, up to this point, they rarely had to point out that
their monarch as the Emperor of the Romans, he was simply the Emperor, for
everyone unde... (more) |

Related What would hâve happened if Alexander Suvorov was

Suvorov was still
alive and active when Napoléon was doing his thing. Suvorov defeated French

|
|
|
Suvorov died in
1800 when he was 70 years oíd. I doubt that it was possible for him to
survive until 1812 and not become a Shell of his former self. At the same time, it was possible for the two great générais
to meet in Italy, and I suspect that Suvorov would hâve had an advantage, as
a commander of both Russian and Austrian troops. Yes, Napoléon knew how to
defeat larger armies, but... (more) |
